During the battle of Iwo Jima, flamethrowers were an often and very useful during the clearing of the Japanese from the caves. The only problem with that is that they were easily shot down, and they were expensive to maintain, and the Government didn't want to keep on replacing them. So some scientists put flamethrowers in the tanks, and it provided a very useful way to clear out the caves of Okinawa without having so many casualties because of the unarmored troops. However because of short time in making them, there were only 8 made, but all 8 survived the battle.
