The island of Iwo Jima was a very small and considered very desert island that was no vacation place. It was hot, humid small, and very uphill. However, it was a strategic location for the invasion of Okinawa, the island that would provide the US a way to raid on Japan. The Japanese realized this, and if the Americans could lose this battle, it would be a major game changer. The other advantage of this for the Japanese was it was riddled with caves, both man made and natural. That made it all the more harder for the US to invade.
Before the landing of troops actually began, the Navy bombarded the coast the island to open up all the caves that would prevent the troops from getting to the island. After that, the Air Force bombed it, and then it was just a matter of clearing out the remaining Japanese. However, because of the giant cave system, this proved very difficult, and that took them three weeks. The hardships were like any other on the other islands that were used to "island hop" to Iwo Jima. Before the battle was even over, the Air Force was used to start raids on Tokyo.
What's most famous about Iwo Jima is the raising of the flag on Mt. Suribachi. Six men raised it, the most famous of which was Ira Hayes. Of the six, only three lived to see the end of the fighting. During the famous raising, a movie was being taken. After they had stopped recording, a bomb sent the camera flying into the pit of the mountain. Fortunately, the This is a map of the landing plan footage was safe.
