The battles of Iwo Jima and Okinawa were fairly simple. They were both part of a technique called Island Hopping to get towards Japan. The tiny island of Iwo Jima was the hopping point for Okinawa, the huge island that was used for the actual invasion of Japan. The defenses for both Iwo Jima and Okinawa were both the massive cave system that was both man made and natural, because they were both volcanic islands.
Iwo Jima was more famous because of the raising of the flag over Mt. Suribachi. The flag raisers were raising the flag, on camera, when almost immediately afterwards, they were shot at, the camera going into the pit. The footage was OK, and is now the famous footage you see, in the memorial and in documentaries.
Okinawa was the first sight of the suicide bombers, and they took out many American warships. The flagship for the Japanese, Yamato, was sent on a suicide mission but was taken out before it had a chance to test it's guns. The islands massive cave system was a problem, though not much of one, because of the new flamethrower tank. It helped clear out the cave systems of the island and there were massive casualties, because the island was over 63 miles long.
